Love, Glorious Love

To love fully. To dive wholeheartedly into connection with another being. To see your soul reflected in your partner’s eyes.

Ah, Love. Glorious, heart-warming, soul-stirring Love.

I’m a big romantic at heart. And what better day to indulge in a little romance than today, Valentine’s Day.

Today I want to share with you a sneak-peek of the things that set my heart a-thumping and my soul a-swooning.

Here’s my romantic rundown!

My favorite romantic movie: During the holiday season, Mark and I snuck away to see Best Man Holiday which was the sequel to the 90s film, The Best Man. The film was filled with many passion points and reminders about love but still didn't do for me what the 1997 American romantic drama, Love Jones, did some 17 years ago. Love Jones is the soundtrack to my relationship with my husband. Our love interest literally began after watching Love Jones together in college. Like Nina, the lead female character in the film, I was on the rebound from my last relationship at the time, and told Mark "the timing just isn't the best," but he started wooing me anyway. And we instantly had chemistry. Three years later we were in marital bliss. 13 years after that we remain in a committed marriage with two handsome sons.

The song that makes me wanna slow dance with my sweetheart: My wedding song actually. I'll never forget coming down the aisle to my girlfriend singing her own lovely rendition of 'Just A Prayer Away' by Gospel artist Yolanda Adams. Adams sings about a love affair with Jesus but her lyrics are perfect for any love fest.

I know that there are times in your life
When the wheels just seem to turn
And uncertainties about your tomorrow seems to grow
One thing you should remember and you should always know
Out of everyone who loves you I love you the most

For I am just prayer away
Call my name with your heart
And I'll hear
Every word you say when you cry at night
I'll wipe those tears away just pray my love
I'll be there right away

You will never have to wonder about my love
Just put your faith and trust in my care
I will always be there to hold you in my arms
When you're afraid don't worry I'll protect you from the storm
Out of everyone who loves you I love you the most

The most romantic thing my husband’s ever done for me: In July 2010, Mark demonstrated the depth of his love for me by granting me permission to live in my purpose every day for the rest of my life. He endorsed my decision to leave my very fabulous career in academia and has funded my dream 100% ever since. And, ten years after founding Play Like A Girl!, he is still the biggest giver to my charity, albeit that has to change if I'm going to build a sustainable business! 🙂

My favorite way to show him how much he means to me: Listening. And, not solve his problem. Sex and intimacy are very high on his list but what Mark wants most from me is to hear him. In fact, that's what most men want. They want us to listen with our hearts so that we really hear them. So, I've learned that I best show my love for my husband when I listen without judgment or solution. Hearing his heart helps to reassure him about how much he really means to me and how much I value what he has to say. Remember, #BeingMaryJane?!?.

And finally, my favorite quote about love: "Above all, love each other deeply, because love covers a multitude of sins." Simply put, 1 Peter 4:8.
