Sisterbration was founded in 2004 and later incorporated on December 20, 2006. In 2009, Sisterbration became a federally-recognized non-profit organization under Section 501c3 of the Internal Revenue Service code.
The Sisterbration mission is to educate, empower and enlighten African-American and other women of color with the knowledge, tools and resources necessary to adopt and maintain a healthy lifestyle.
Girls have the right to develop into healthy and empowered women who grow old and live to see their great-granddaughters laugh and play. This principle guided Sisterbration founder Dr. Kimberly S. Clay to create one of the country's premiere health organizations and is upheld in each Sisterbration program. Every initiative celebrates healthy lifestyle choices and is designed to inspire a movement by, for and about minority women and their health. And of course, there is a healthy balance of education and entertainment built into each program. Sisterbration programs are designed for women and girls ranging from 8 to 80, with a special emphasis on chronic and infectious disease prevention/control.
The idea for Sisterbration was birthed in 2004. Initially, the organization existed as a small group of professional women who shared a Friday evening together once a month. Each month, women in the group would lend their expertise to educate one another about new and interesting topics relevant to women’s health. Every group meeting would close with a celebration – women sharing stories about how the group experience had inspired changes in their lives. Women reported everything from weight loss to healthier sex behaviors. Soon, group participants began inviting others, forcing the group meeting out of Dr. Kim’s living room and into public venues. Then, Dr. Kim recounts hearing the Spirit speak: “What you have begun must be shared with women everywhere.” This is the moment she first thought of Sisterbration as we know it today.
